The Ruck 2 Remember 2022 Ruck March will be coming to our branch this Sun August 7th at 5pm for their closing ceremonies. We invite all members, and the community to come out and support!
The Ruck marchers have been on the move for over 1 month covering 900KM of the entire Bruce Trail from Tobermory down to Niagara Falls, starting on July 5th 2022. This initiative is in support of a Legion program called “Operation: Leave the Streets Behind” (which aims to get and keep veterans off the streets)
The Ruck Marchers expect to come off the trail at Queenston Heights between 3:30 and 4 pm, depending on the difficulties encountered on that day. Arrangements are being made to allow them to then freshen up before we all meet at Branch 124 at approx. 5 pm. A BBQ is being prepared for a 3-4pm start and they have requested food service before we present our donations. There will be dignitaries and media outlets on site. We recommend all comrades to wear Legion branded merchandise if possible.
Ruck To Remember is built on volunteers who are dedicated to raising awareness and funds to support the Paramedics, Firefighters, Law Enforcement, and Military (present, past and future) by hosting and taking part in events and fundraising. Ruck to Remember currently has volunteers with diverse backgrounds who are eager to partake in the annual ruck, along with other fundraising and events that will help support the front line responders and their families.
“Leave the Streets Behind” is the Legion's national homeless Veterans program that started out of Ontario Command. The program's mission is to reach out to homeless Veterans and those at-risk of homelessness and provide them with immediate financial assistance and support.
The branch has been contacted by the Acting Sub-Lieutenant, Scott C. Ferris, stating the honour it would be for them to welcome our branch members aboard the HCMS ORIOLE, the sail training vessel of the Royal Canadian Navy that will be in port at Niagara-on-the-Lake docking at the Niagara-on-the-Lake Sailing Club, 10 Melville Street from June 17-20, 2022. The ship will be open for public deck tours from 1:00pm to 4:00pm 17 June and again from 10:00am to 4:00pm on both 18 & 19 June.
ORIOLE is taking part in the Great Lakes Deployment 2022(GLD) which will see the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) visiting communities along the St. Lawrence Seaway and Great Lakes. GLD provides Canadians with a unique opportunity to tour one of Canada’s naval ships and to learn about life in the Royal Canadian Navy from our sailors.
It also provides an opportunity to speak with our sailors and recruiters to find out more about a career in the RCN. Or, if you have already submitted an application online, you can come see the RCN in-person to learn more about your future career in the RCN.
Her Majesty’s Canadian Ships (HMCS) Oriole (May to August) and Glace Bay (June 24 to July 29) are this year’s GLD ambassadors. If you want to learn more about the Navy, come and #SeaForYourself this summer.
Comrades, Her Honour Elizabeth Dowdeswell, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario will be in the Old town Niagara on the Lake on Saturday June 4th 2022 to help us recognize our cenotaph being unveiled 100 years ago. Our Legion branch will participate in a parade and service on Queen St. The parade will form up on Market St. stepping off at 10.45. I invite all of our Branch members to join us that day. We need all those able to march to fill out our ranks. You can wear your Legion Uniform with metals, or even a suit and tie. It is an opportunity to be recognized for your service. Marching with us will be a Quarter guard from the Lincoln & Welland Regiment and band, and our town fire department. The Branch will be open at 12.00 noon that day. Please consider participating, and if you can’t march, you can watch.
